Designing for Zero Client JavaScript

Modern sites often ship more JavaScript than the original content demands. Editorial pages should prioritize reading, not booting a JavaScript runtime.

Islands, not SPAs

Astro's islands architecture renders HTML on the server and only hydrates interactive components when necessary. For a reading experience, that's zero by default.

Progressive enhancement

Small enhancements like reading progress or theme toggles use vanilla scripts. No client-side routers, no global state libraries, and no hydration waterfalls.

Measured impact

Fewer bytes mean faster Largest Contentful Paint, better Interaction to Next Paint, and improved resilience on slow networks. Most importantly, content remains accessible without JavaScript.
